2023 Earth Day Festival

Saturday, 1pm-3:30pm, April 22, 2023

On Earth Day 2023, BAYCS hosted a climate joy festival bringing together over 100 students from across the Bay Area and 6 high school environmental clubs for an afternoon packed with collaboration, crafting, music, action, climate optimism, and hope-making! The festival included interactive activities, youth-run climate justice-themed booths, a climate art fair, sustainable crafts, live music, and food in Lindley Meadows in Golden Gate Park! Attendees learned about the importance of intersectional environmentalism while celebrating climate wins through environmental-themed games and protest poster-making.

Ocean Jeopardy - Saint Ignatius Booth

Environmental Club leaders from St. Ignatius hosted a fun and interactive “Jeopardy” style game exploring pertinent climate education and solutions, including news sources, reports, plant-related knowledge, ocean facts, and climate resilience strategies and plans. Participants won prizes as well as broadened their climate trivia knowledge

Fungi & Biodiversity - Marin Academy Booth

Environmental Club leaders from Marin Academy hosted an interactive booth teaching attendees about the importance of fungi and mushrooms in our ecosystems, as they assemble mushroom growing kits using soil, substrate, spawn, and grow bags. Attendees gained a greater appreciation for biodiversity and took grow bags home to foster their own mushrooms.

Monarch Butterflies in CA’s Ecosystem - Lick-Wilmerding Booth

Environmental Club leaders from Lick-Wilmerding hosted a booth exploring the interconnected relationship between monarch butterflies and ecosystems, and finally unpacking concerns and human-nature resilience. This booth featured information on butterflies' anatomy, how the climate crisis affects them, and monarchs migration patterns in California. Attendees took fun photos with a life-size, student-created art cut out of monarch wings.

Energy, Civics, & Transportation - Alameda High School Booth

Environmental Club leaders from Alameda High School hosted a booth centering energy, civics, and transportation, where they surveyed all the attendee's modes of transportation to Golden Gate Park. They provided sustainable transport plans. In addition, attendees played a trivia cup-toss game teaching the lesson of how our transportation choices impact the environment to win prizes.

Youth Action - Nueva Booth

Environmental Club leaders from Nueva hosted a booth exploring the different avenues youth can take to get involved in the climate justice movement. The booth highlighted ways youth can go beyond their school and the Bay Area to have an impact through letter writing and looking at ways others have made a difference in their community.

Plastic-free Beauty Industry - Washington High School Booth

Environmental Club leaders from Washington High School hosted an interactive booth where attendees make hair scrubs, with the goal of highlighting how the beauty and skincare industry can go plastic-free. Additionally, the booth shared infographics with information about microplastics & the ocean.

Indigenous Plants - BAYCS Booth

BAYCS team members hosted a booth tracking Indigenous plants in Golden Gate Park while sharing educational content. Attendees learned from maps and brochures how to identify Indigenous plants, including types of plants, visual characteristics, and where to find them in the park. Attendees also played a fun bingo activity where they received prizes for taking photos of local native plants!

Art Activism - BAYCS Booth

BAYCS team members will host a hands-on art-making booth centering on the vital role of using art and creative expression to mobilize communities to tackle the climate crisis. Attendees will engage in multimedia crafts, combining paint, pencil, marker, stamp, and more to create posters, cards, and banners of climate justice, youth, hope, and resilience.
